Horrified

While I have not used this blog much to commentate on current events (other than current fashions), in light of recent events I feel compelled to give my $.02.

On Friday, December 14 in Newtown, CT, the lives of 20 children were taken along with the innocence of thousands and thousands more across the nation.  We will never understand why; even if the shooter had not taken his own life I cannot begin to comprehend what it is like to be in such a dark and lonely place.  Shootings like this have occurred before - recently, and all too often.  But somehow this one is more poignant, more emotionally loaded because so many children were pointlessly targeted.

I hope to be a mother some day, and all I wish for is the ability to bring my future children into a world where I can reasonably expect to keep them safe.

"This is our first task — caring for our children. It's our first job. If we don't get that right, we don't get anything right. That's how, as a society, we will be judged.
And by that measure, can we truly say, as a nation, that we are meeting our obligations? Can we honestly say that we're doing enough to keep our children — all of them — safe from harm? Can we claim, as a nation, that we're all together there, letting them know that they are loved, and teaching them to love in return? Can we say that we're truly doing enough to give all the children of this country the chance they deserve to live out their lives in happiness and with purpose?
I've been reflecting on this the last few days, and if we're honest with ourselves, the answer is no. We're not doing enough. And we will have to change.

~ President Obama, Sandy Hook Elementary Prayer Vigil

But exactly what changes need to happen?  What more can we do as a nation to give our children a fighting chance to live in a safe, yet realistic world?  To maintain the right to a real, impactful childhood that isn't slowly invaded and suffocated by the evil of the world that surrounds us?

Following the tragedy (and by following I mean mere HOURS afterwards), the mediaverse exploded with angry demands for stricter gun control.  If gun control is taken more seriously, if more stringent laws are put in place, if the whole process is better regulated, surely we can avoid future tragic events like this one.  In theory, yes, that stance makes perfect sense.  Stricter gun laws = better regulation of who owns what weapons = less crime.

But wait a minute.  Let us not forget the most disturbing piece of this whole puzzle:  the shooter used his own mother's gun, which was LEGALLY purchased.  He stormed and broke his way in to the school, which required guests to be buzzed in and had security protocols in place, and carried out this heinous attack.  I truly believe that better gun control laws would not have prevented this.  The shooter was going to do what he was going to do and nothing was going to stop him. I'm not pretending that I have the solution, but I think it is dangerous for the nation to get caught up and distracted by a debate over gun control at this time.  A debate that has been circling around Congress for decades but never resolved.  There are other issues (mental illness, for one) that need addressing here, and if they are ignored while we continue to figure out the same old song and dance once and for all, the same problems will find a way to slip through even supposedly air tight legislation.

We, as a nation need to pause.  We need to mourn.  Process.  Digest what has happened.  If we keep pushing forward, if politicians rush to use this event to nudge their agendas forward without missing a step, we have failed.  Sometimes it is not always the healthy thing to continue on like nothing has happened.  We focus so desperately on restoring normalcy as quickly as possible when something like this happens, when we really need to take the time to learn from our mistakes.

As parents we would do anything to shield our children from harm.  We protect them, keep them in a bubble as the world closes in around us.  And what has that done?  Created a society of anxious, depressed, angry people who are taught to blame others for their difficult situations.  Yes, our little worlds need to keep functioning.  We need to keep getting up in the morning, keep loving our children, and keep trusting that they will be safe when they leave home.  But we need to do so with an awareness of what the "new normal" of our world is.  We are not doing enough.  And we will have to change.

Another Wardrobe Dimension

If you're like me, you have a couple stores that are your "go-tos" for basics (button down shirts, the perfect-fitting LBD, jeans, etc) and other stores that you gravitate towards when you're looking for something special.  Something special that's just a little different from the norm to add color and dimension to your wardrobe.  For me, Kate Spade is one of those stores.  While I wouldn't call myself a frequent shopper, I do check out the website frequently to see if anything catches my eye (read: things I didn't know I needed until I saw them.....)

Here are a few of my favorite recent discoveries:

Pop Palette Bib Necklace - $89.00 - On sale!

This piece is probably my favorite out of the three.  The colors immediately caught my eye because they go along perfectl with the majority of my wardrobe palette.  This necklace is perfect to wear now with all my winter sweaters, and later with sundresses when the weather gets warm again.  The fact that it's on sale right now makes it even better!

This particular dress may not float everyone's boat, but I'm loving the cinched waste and keyhole detail in the back.  Great to wear now under a black sweater / cardigan and some boots, or on it's own as pictured above with flats for an adorable transition into spring.

Who doesn't love a Kate Spade sweater dress?  The bow detail adds the Kate Spade twist to an otherwise simple grey creation, but what I'm loving most about this is the fit.  The banded waste and swingy skirt made it flirty and fun.  Completely work appropriate, I'm bound to get tons of use out of it with tights and booties.

Hopelessly Devoted To You

Crinkle Patent Ella Tote

That's right, Tory Burch.  I'm talking about you!  Your products suit my personality perfectly and the pieces I have bought from your collections have completely transformed my wardrobe, in a good way!  It's why I have brought up your name so much in this blog, and keep coming back for more!

This bag (the Crinkle Patent Ella Tote) is my latest obsession.  I own her in the gorgeous deep blue color that now seems to be sold out, and will soon be purchasing her in "Shell" as well.  These totes are big enough to fit everything I need and are just the most perfect bags I have ever owned.  The Italian patent leather is gorgeous and substantial, so I know the bags won't be wearing out on me any time soon, and I literally get a compliment on my bag whenever I carry it.

My new weekend wardrobe lately has been a pair of leggings, oversized sweater, and this lovely creation.

Clinique Age Defense BB Cream

Hello!  Well once again I have neglected this blog.  My mind has been occupied with other things lately, namely my promotion at work and the holidays upon us.  I offer no other excuse.

Have I made any new purchases in my absence?  Umm, yes.  What a silly question.  And I will be reviewing my favorite said purchases very soon.  Today though, I'm going to pause from talking about fashion and switch gears a little bit.   Rarely have I discussed my beauty routine here, but I have found a product I absolutely must gush about.

Clinique Age Defense BB Cream.

Age Defense BB Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30

I'll start off my saying my skin is very, very fair.  It doesn't take much to make me look washed out.  This makes it very difficult to find products like concealer, bronzers, self tanners, etc, that don't look too orange-y or obvious on me.  At the same time though, a lot of the lighter concealers, etc, that actually match my skin tone aren't dark enough to provide coverage for any flaws.  It's been an endless search of trial and error, but my mission is now over.

BB Creams have been popular in Asian countries like China and Japan for years (ever notice how they all seem to have perfect skin???), and are now finally taking off in the US.  They are immediately appealing because they provide multiple benefits in only one product:  SPF protection, hydration, antioxidants for prevention, plus enough coverage for any problem areas.  So instead over slathering several different products on my face in the morning, I'm one and done.  Dry winter weather may call for an extra layer of moisturizer underneath, but that's it.  I follow my usual skin care routing of cleanser, toner, and moisturizer (all Clinque products), then use this as my concealer for the day.  My skin is smoother, my pores are smaller, and I am thrilled.

As a side note, I love products like this that come in tubes like this rather than jars.  The less I need to use my fingers, the less opportunity germs have to breed and be introduced to the skin as I apply the product.

Clinique's BB Cream comes in three different shades (I of course use #1, the lightest one).  Even if you think your skin tone doesn't match exactly to one of the shades offered, don't be afraid to give this product a try!  It blends in really well to create an even, natural look.  And if you're still not sold on using this product as your primary concealer, it works amazingly well as a primer, too (ditch your heavier moisturizer with SPF and use this instead!)  If I think I need a color boost I just add a light bronzer over this product and I'm good to go.

At $37.00 I thought this was a little pricey for a concealer until I thought about how much money I'll be saving by NOT having to buy other, separate products anymore.

I hope you've run out of reasons NOT to try this product (BTW, BB creams are now coming out of the wood works from other brands as well.  If Clinique doesn't do it for you like it does for me, don't give up on BB.  Try another brand!)  Let me know what you think!

Ode To Fall!

Here in New England, the cold weather is setting in.  You notice it mostly at night, when the temps can get down to a chilly 40-50 degrees.  The leaves are changing colors, football is back, and I'm happy as a clam.  This is what New England is all about.  If you don't love and appreciate Fall, you don't deserve to live here!  More posts will follow with some of my favorite Fall recipes (because on Fall Sundays you'll often find me in my kitchen, preparing a big delicious meal to eat while watching my Patriots).  Today, though, since I've neglected this blog for a good long while, I'm going to jump back in to the swing of things with an old fashioned shopping post!

I need to give a giant shout-out to JCrew.  This is one of those stores that isn't always on my "list" of places to look when I'm in a shopping mood, but I eventually take a peek anyway and remember just how much I absolutely LOVE it!  This Fall preppy, polished fashion seems to be having a moment and nobody does preppy better than JCrew.  It's very easy to overdo preppy though, so with JCrew I often find myself sifting through the selection finding things that will both compliment and add dimension to the wardrobe I already have at the same time.  You won't find me wearing popped collar polo shirts but you WILL find me going crazy over a fresh palatte of colors and perfectly tailored (and cozy!) sweaters.

Here is the latest round of winners I picked up from JCrew's fall collection:

Jaspé scoopneck popover
Jaspe Scoopneck Popover, $95.00

Houndstooth sweatshirt
Houndstooth Sweatshirt, $65.00

Jeweled sweatshirt
Jeweled Sweatshirt, $118.00

Pixie pant
Pixie Pant, $88.00

*** If you MUST buy one thing from JCrew this Fall, buy THESE!!  They have the fit and comfort of leggings, but in a much nicer fabric.  I bought them in two different colors (black and navy) and will be going after the grey soon.  These are the pants you'll want to wear pretty much ALL the time.

Oversize merino sweater
Oversize Merino Wool Sweater, $118.00.  Also bought this in two different colors.  Comfy, cozy, and perfectly proportioned so it's slouchy without making you feel like you're swimming in it.  You'll never go back!  A weekend wardrobe must!

All of these choices easily add some prep to my step without making me feel like I'm a poser =).  Check out JCrew for yourself!

Happy shopping and check back soon because I'm on my game again!

My Uniform

In case you haven't noticed from my previous posts, I LOVE dresses.  So much, in fact, that I wear them nearly every day.  They are ALOT less constricting than pants and I believe they are much more flattering on my hourglass, curvy figure.  Of course, the type of dress I wear changes with the seasons.  In the winter, it's cozy sweater dresses made of wool.  In the summer, it's flowy sundresses in light, airy cotton and silk.  Recently, I've also become a HUGE fan of maxi dresses.  Their longer length keeps you covered (so you can go a few days longer without shaving your legs!) and you can find one for any occasion.  Making the rounds of clothing stores lately proves that summer 2012 is definitely the time to pick one up, too.  They seem to be available everywhere right now in bunches of fresh colors and styles.

I just picked this one up from Banana Republic.  Available here.

I love the orange and the v-neck neckline is flattering on everyone.  I'll be wearing it as is for a casual weekend outfit or potentially even to work paired with this sheet metallic sweater, also from BR, available here.

If you look closely, lots of people will revert to the article of clothing that looks best on them and buy and wear it over and over in every color and style they can find.  What is your uniform??

Tory Burch Fall 2012....It's Coming!

If I could put into words how excited I am about the Fall 2012 Tory Burch collection, it still wouldn't cover it.  So I'm not even going to try.  Just...promise me you'll check it out (below).  Thank you.

TORY BURCH FALL 2012 COLLECTION

RecipeSolutions: Oriental Salad

Summer staples in my diet include many, many different types of salad.  Potato salad and a couple different takes on Orzo salad come to mind.  Today though, I'm going to share with you all one of my best kept secret recipes - the Oriental Salad recipe I made for dinner tonight!  It is such a crowd pleaser and looks SO pretty when it's all put together!

Combine the following in a large salad bowl:

1 bunch scallions, chopped or snipped
1 green bell pepper, chopped finely
1 bag each of shredded green and red cabbage (or just buy one head of each and shred by hand, eyeball)

Set aside and chill in refrigerator until ready to serve.

Combine the following in a skillet and toast over a medium heat until lightly browned:

1/2 cup slivered almonds
1/8 cup sesame seeds
noodles only from Ramen Noodle packet (Oriental flavor, set seasoning packet aside)

Set aside and KEEP SEPARATE until just before serving.

For dressing:

1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 white vinegar
1/2 cup vegetable oil
seasoning packet from ramen noodles
1/2 cup sugar

Combine ingredients, set aside and KEEP SEPARATE until just before serving (if you don't do this, the dry ingredients will get soggy!)

When ready to serve, add dry ingredients and dressing to vegetables in salad bowl.  Enjoy!!

Low-Key 4th

Happy 4th of July!!  I hope everyone is relaxing and enjoying a day off, eating a ton of good BBQ and spending time with friends and family!

I love this holiday, and in years past I've enjoyed many great ones at blowout cookout parties or out boating with family, on the beach down the Cape, and aboard the Staten Island ferry watching the fireworks over the Manhattan skyline in New York.  This year is different.  We had big plans to see the Boston Pops and Jennifer Hudson perform at the Hatch Shell in Boston, but it was pouring in the morning and by the time it stopped we were no longer motivated  to go knowing we would never find a good spot.  So, we've spent a low-key 4th at home.  We DID manage to cook out on the grill (because I believe eating anything other than grill fare on the 4th is a travesty), and neither of us are disappointed that we got an extra day to spend some real quality time together just hanging out around the house.

But you guys know me.  What am I going to do if I have some free time on my hands at home?  Scout out the 4th of July deals, of course!  Tory Burch had a sale going on so I ventured over to that website first.  Immediately saw this "Judi" dress and fell in love.  SO great for work and as a transitional item from summer to fall.  The website must be doing really good business today though, because by the time I had made up my mind and got this item in my cart, it was sold out in my size =(.  But all wasn't lost.

Another sneaky shopping tip?  We all hate it when we can't find the item we love in our preferred color / size online.  But don't take no for an answer!  If you're willing to spend a little extra time and effort there is still a way to satisfy your shopping bug.  Call customer service (btw..another reason I love Tory Burch?  Their customer service line is answered by a LIVE person Every.  Single.  Time. No annoying menus or voice automated systems) and give them the style number for the item.  They can do a nationwide search for you to find any stores that are carrying the item in your size (they found the dress in stock in my size at a New York store).  Then call up the store, have them locate the item, and you can purchase it over the phone with a credit card and have it shipped to you, usually for free!

C'Mon, isn't this dress worth it?  Shop it here.  Even if you're not crazy about Tory, be sure to check out your own favorite store this week - they're bound to be running good sales on pre-fall items that are already out!

Triumphant Return

Why hello!  *GASP* yes I know - I'm back!  A reprieve from shopping as well as some traveling in the recent weeks has caused my negligence, but never fear....my eyes and wallet are always open for some shopping =)

So what drove me back after a 2-month break?  Let me show you, grasshoppers!

1)  Remember the Burberry Military Detail Shirt Dress I blogged in my last post?  I found it on sale for only $139.00!  This purchase alone gets me just an itsy bit excited for cooler fall weather again so I can break it out of my closest and wear it with knee high black leather boots.

One of the best shopping tips I can offer is...if you see an item you LOVE on the designer's website - don't settle and stop there!  Just by googling the item you'll likely find the same thing for sale at other locations (department stores, overstock websites, etc.)  You may even be surprised and find that the same item comes in other colors and prints not offered directly by the designer.  This simple trick has saved me money and heartache when I thought an item was sold out in my size.

2)  THIS!  While I've been away, two titans of the fashion world (Banana Republic and Trina Turk) have paired up to create a fabulous new collection inspired by "cocktails by the pool."  These two fashion brands could not be more perfect together, and it's leaving me wondering why it took them so long to get collaborate!  Available for sale at Banana Republic stores and online beginning June 7, here's a little preview of a few of my favorites.  I can't WAIT to get my hands on them!

The colors and fun prints just make me so happy and they're sure to be staples of my summer wardrobe.

More where these came from but I will save them for another day.  Happy Shopping!

Wardrobe Booster

What if I told you I could hand you ONE single item that when worn with ANY other item in your wardrobe (yes, even gym clothes or old pajamas) could turn your outfit from frumpy to classy?  Would you grab it?  Burberry happens to have just such an item:

(Mega Check Wool Cape, Burberry, $550.00, found here.)

If the price scares you, check out this item by Free People instead ($44.99, found here:

I happen to own this item in both the grey (shown above) and a beautiful magenta / pomegranate color that I could no longer find on the website.  Yes, it is a total splurge and my husband would probably have a few things to say if he knew how much I spent on them, but they are worth every penny.  I wear them EVERYWHERE - at work over any OOTD when the office gets cold, on the weekends over jeans and a top with boots, and even to get dolled up for the night on the town over a dress and heels.  In the warmer spring weather, the wool blend is even warm enough to replace a heavier jacket.  They are beautiful, timeless, and versatile (BTW - if I have not made my love for Burberry perfectly clear on this blog as of yet, I have been remiss.  If you are ever looking for a classic investment piece to round out your wardrobe that will hold up over time - stop there first!!)

I am also currently coveting:

(Lightweight Denim Shirt Dress, $495.00, found here.)

and

(Military Detail Shirt Dress, $495.00, found here).

At this time of year, my eye is geared towards items I will be sure to get lots of use out of now through the last of the chilly nights, and again in the fall.  All are excellent transition items from Winter to Spring.

Happy Shopping!

St. Patrick's Day!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!  I hope everyone is enjoying the day and behaving themselves ;).  All I know is that I have been drinking something called "Angry Orchard" all afternoon and have no intention of stopping soon.  It's a nice, bright and pleasant, hard cider and this stuff is very, very good, let me tell you.  Check it out here.  A great option for those like myself who do not have the stomach for Guinness.

I am getting ready to go out on the town for the night and the dilemma on St. Patrick's Day is always the same: how far do I take this green, "luck of the Irish" theme?  I am now safely out of college.  Gone are the days of wearing t-shirts emblazoned with "I Was Kissed By A Leprechaun" in glitter across the front and painting shamrocks on my cheek.  Oh no, my friends.  Sadly those days have passed me by, but I still found myself searching for a more subtle way to join in the festivities.  Tonight, my solution is this:

(Burberry, "Dark Canvas Green", Cotton and Silk Blend Mesh Knit, $350.00, found here)

Topped off with black skinny jeans and these pumps:

(Michael Kors Glitter Patent Pump, $195.00, found here)

I am feeling comfortable enough for some pub hopping and good to go!  And so, I leave you with a blessing, and may the Luck of the Irish find you wherever your night takes you =).

Lucky stars above you,
Sunshine on your way,
Many friends to love you,
Joy in work and play-
Laughter to outweigh each care,
In your heart a song-
And gladness waiting everywhere
All your whole life long.

May the roads rise to meet you.
May the wind be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
The rain fall soft upon your fields
And, until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
A GAELIC BLESSING

OOTD: Spring Has Sprung!

The 7-day weather forcast for my area doesn't show ONE day with temperatures below 60 degrees.  Is winter officially over?  You never know in New England, but this is looking pretty promising, my friends!  So what does this mean?  The ritual of slowly transitioning from my fall/winter to spring/summer wardrobe and the daunting task of switching over my closet.  I'm not ready to go at it full force just yet, but slowly and surely I find myself shying away from heavier winter sweaters in favor of lighter tops and flowy skirts.

So here is my outfit for today:

 ALARICE SWEATER

Sweater: Tory Burch.  $250.00.  100% cotton in a miracle blend that breaths when its warm yet keeps you toasty when it gets nippy (still a threat in Boston March weather). Found here.  Print mixing is a HUGE trend this season, and if you're like me and skeptical about too much pattern play, this sweater does all the work for you and still lets you in on the trend.  I opted to balance the pattern out with a solid color on the bottom rather than piling on more print as shown above.

Skirt: GREAT find at BR; 100% silk and bought during a promotion for 30% off $98.00.  Both work-appropriate and easy to pack and throw in with some beachy tops for vacation!  Found here.

Today, I am topping this outfit off with a pair of older grey cowboy boots.  But I am currently coveting these:

BEVERLY LOW HEEL PUM | LUCIE D | 914
(Tory Burch, $295.00) that I think would go nicely as well, and add to the pattern play.)

At just about the time when I'm starting to get sick off all my winter garments, Spring has finally sprung!  (watch - I just jinxed us all and a massive snowstorm is on the way for next week now....)  Now to keep an eye on my tulips, daffodils, and crocuses who should begin to show their lovely faces soon all over my garden =)

Here's to spring fever!

Restaurant Review - Burtons Grill

Love is lingering in the air this week after a wonderful Valentine's Day with my husband.  Together for almost 6 years, he still knows how to lay on the romance =).  This Valentine's Day he made reservations at a new place - Burtons Grill in Burlington, MA.  If you ask me, trying a new place on Valentine's Day is definitely a risk but that's part of the adventure and it gave us something to look forward to rather than just eating another typical dinner out at one of our usual places.

So how did Burtons check out?

When we arrived, my first impression was that the atmosphere was very dark - and not as in a romantic, candle-lit dark.  In fact, there were no candles to be found in the entire place.  It was just very dim for the sake of being dim, except for the brightly lit kitchen, which was open and glowing in the back of the restaurant.  I mentioned in a previous review that I do like places where I can actually see inside the kitchen where they are cooking my food.  But the particular lighting situation in this place constantly guided your eye back there and the kitchen activity wasn't something I wanted as the focal point throughout my entire meal.

When it was time to order, we opted for the calamari appetizer.  Our plate arrived with a pile of calamari and a side of tartar sauce.  No cocktail sauce, not even a lemon garnish.  What happened to presentation, people?  For $12.00, I want my lemon wedge, darn it!  The calamari itself, though, was excellent.  Good texture (not too rubbery) and flavor.

For dinner, we were boring and both ordered the crab cakes.  Mine with grilled asparagus and a baked potato; his with green beans and rice.  The crab cakes were good; not the best I have ever had.  To be fair, I should mention I grew up spending summers on Cape Cod, eating super fresh seafood.  I compare all the seafood I eat now to Cape Cod quality, and not everything is going to measure up.  These, however, came pretty close.

To summarize, Burtons Grill is a great place for a quality meal.  You will not be disappointed in the food.  If you're looking to be blown away by special touches and details, though, head somewhere else and save this place for a night out with friends - not a Valentine's Day dinner!  All in all it was a pleasant dining experience and we happily brought our leftovers home to eat again the following night.

RecipeSolutions: Easy Beef Stew

I was going to wait to post this recipe until I had a nice and snowy, frigid winter night on my hands.  The meal I am about to make is total cold weather comfort food.  Well, as I write this, it is 60 degrees outside.  60 DEGREES!!!!  On February 1 - normally the dead of winter.  Who would have thought?  Anyway, I have all the ingredients for this I don't want to waste and time on my hands tonight.  So, I offer you a delicious beef stew recipe that is satisfying and surprisingly easy to whip up!  Enjoy!

Ingredients:

1 1/2 pounds cubed beef FOR STEWING
2 carrots (large)
2 potatoes
1/2 onion
chopped mushrooms
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
nutmeg
salt and pepper
2 chicken bouillon cubes
3 tbsp vegetable oil

1.  Add vegetable oil to skillet and turn on burner to a medium-high heat.

2.  While oil is warming, cut cubed beef into smaller bite sized pieces and set aside.

3.  In a large mixing bowl, mix flour with 1 tsp each of salt and pepper.

4.  Coat beef with flour mixture and gently add to skillet.  Begin browning beef.

5.  While beef is browning, chop 1/2 onion and add to skillet.

6.  While beef continues to brown, peel and chop carrots and potatoes to bite-sized pieces and add to skillet.  Add mushrooms.

7.  Once beef is completely browned, add 1 cup water and chicken bouillon cubes to skillet.  Cover and simmer at low heat for 1/2 hour, stirring occasionally to cook evenly.  I like to stir every 10 min.  Mixture will thicken to a stew consistency.

8.  Add salt, pepper and nutmeg to taste and serve!

Amazingly flavorful and naturally satisfying, it's a perfect winter meal (and the ONLY thing I will actually use red meat for.)  For every other recipe, I substitute ground turkey, chicken etc.  But, let's face it.  Beef stew just needs beef!

All That Glitters is GOLD

I'm a woman who is always looking to add a little sparkle to my life, so today I'm going to talk about gold and sequins.  Don't judge me.

Dr. Susan Lisman is a friend of my mother's who spends half her year working as an Anesthesiologist in a Boston hospital, and the other half staying at her second home in Hawaii.  I know.  I hate her too.  She must have needed a way to pass the time between those spectacular Hawaiian sunsets, because she took up jewelry making as a hobby.  Her creations are one-of-a-kind, and customized for each customer.  I have no idea where she finds the incredible beads and clasps she uses, but they are truly breathtaking and have a level of detail I haven't seen anywhere else.  I was lucky enough to nag one of her designs to wear on my wedding day, and now whenever I feel I need a bit of extra sparkle.

This bracelet ran around $125.  I guarantee you, any of Dr. Lisman's creations look 1000% pricier than they actually are.  A well-kept little secret, Dr. Lisman doesn't even have a website of her own to refer you to.  Should you be able to track her down, she may just find the time to create YOUR perfect piece!

A stunning piece of jewelry needs equally stunning clothing to wear it with, which brings me to my quest for the perfect gold dress.

Thanks alot, Aidan Mattox for giving me another dress to lust after.  But...but...just LOOK at it!

I have had it in my head that I need a gold dress for quite some time but (1) just couldn't find one I fell in love with and (2) didn't always have an event in mind I would actually want to wear one to.  It IS gold sequins we're talking about here.  You can't just wear those anywhere ;).

THIS is a dress you find and create events to wear for.  The fabric is stunning and unique - the perfect shade of gold sprinkled with sequins that are very tastefully done - not gaudy or blindingly shiny.  I love the draping and cut, and the skirt isn't too short.  What's not to love?  It's brilliant.  Gold sequin dresses have certainly been done many times before by many different designers, but I hereby nominate this one for the most perfect version...EVER.

Now when the hell could I wear it?  Valentines Day dinner, perhaps?

Currently Coveting: Tory Burch Resort Collection

Tory Burch has some pretty amazing pieces in her Spring / Resort 2012 collection.  Full of vibrant prints and color, these pieces make me want to drop everything and go on vacation.  The best part about the collection, though, is that you don't HAVE to go on vacation to wear them.  Many items are just versitile enough to make them work for the office once the weather gets warm again.

This colorful confection is next on my list.  I am loving the floral print and it's a cinch to dress up with wedges and a cardigan for work or down with flip flops.

NICOLA DRESS

For elegant style poolside, I am also in love with Tory's collection of caftans.  Obviously these aren't going to make the cut for work, but they work as a beach cover up or as an adorable outfit when paired with leggings, shorts, or even a short skirt.

And finally...

Every once in a while, there comes a piece that is so special, you can justify putting down some extra cash just to get your hands on it.  Usually I stalk the Tory Burch website and wait until her new arrivals are marked down before I buy anything.  I run the risk of something I like being sold out before it goes on sale, but I take my chances.

This beauty was different.  I saw it, it was love at first sight, I grabbed it immediately.  Soft 100% silk in constrasting eye-catching hues of red and blue topped off with a timeless chain link design.  It's a beautiful, modern twist in a flattering cut, too!  Work appropriate and also very easy to throw in a suitcase.  I'll be chomping at the bits over the next few months for my first chance to wear it!

RecipeSolutions: Pastaless Eggplant Parm for Two

Hello!  I'm back!  Nope, I'm not sick of the blog already - just very busy!  Ivan and I have been all over the place, including spending this past weekend in the Pocanos with 7 of our friends.  We all pitched in to rent a four-bedroom house, drinking and skiing ensued, and good times were had by all.  On our way home, we made a pit stop in New York to visit Ivan's family since we didn't have a chance to see them for Christmas.  We exchanged some belated gifts, lamented at the fact we didn't have Monday off (we took Friday off instead) so we couldn't just spend the night, and made our way home from there.  By the time we got home and unpacked the car, I was WAY too tired to think about cooking dinner.  We don't generally like fast food and everything else was closed late on a Sunday night so we did our best with what we could find around the house.

Following a massive grocery shopping trip, I am back to my usual self this week who insists on cooking a decent meal every night.  I am always looking for nutritious yet flavorful recipes that are also easy to throw together on a week night after work (aren't we all?)

Today I am going to post a recipe that is a favorite of ours (and is on the menu for tonight!)  It's a different take on eggplant parmesean that defeats the stereotype of a mushy, goopy casserole.  In fact, the recipe skips the "bake in a casserole dish" completely.  When the eggplant is golden brown, you simply assemble it on a plate along with the sauce.  Additionally, because the eggplant is actually crispy and substantial, the recipe is filling and satisfying without the extra carb load of pasta.  The result is a dish so good I'd be remiss not to share the wealth.  Enjoy!

Eggplant Parmesean for Two

IMG_4218

Serves 2
1     medium eggplant (about 1 pound)
    ¼    cup all-purpose flour
    1     large egg
    ½    cup panko bread crumbs
    ¾    cup grated Parmesan cheese
          Salt and pepper
½    cup plus 3 tablespoons olive oil
    4     garlic cloves, minced
    ¼    teaspoon red pepper flakes
    1     (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes
    ¼    cup chopped fresh basil
    ½    cup shredded provolone cheese

1. BREAD EGGPLANT. Cut two ¾-inch planks lengthwise from center of eggplant, halve each plank crosswise, and cut remaining eggplant into ½-inch dice. Place flour in shallow dish. Beat egg in second shallow dish. Combine bread crumbs, ¼ cup Parmesan, ¼ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon pepper in third shallow dish. One at a time, coat eggplant slices lightly with flour, dip them in egg, and dredge in bread-crumb mixture, pressing to adhere. Transfer to wire rack set inside rimmed baking sheet and let sit 5 minutes (or refrigerate up to 1 hour).

2. COOK EGGPLANT. Adjust oven rack to upper-middle position and heat oven to 450 degrees. Heat ½ cup oil in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Cook -eggplant slices until lightly browned, about 1 minute per side. Transfer to wire rack set inside baking sheet and bake until eggplant is tender and deep golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes.

3. MAKE SAUCE. Meanwhile, pour off oil and wipe out skillet with paper towels. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in empty skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add chopped eggplant and ¼ -teaspoon salt and cook, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned, about 3 minutes. Stir in remaining oil, garlic, and pepper flakes and cook until fragrant, about 30 -seconds. Add tomatoes and reduce heat to medium. Simmer until eggplant is tender and sauce is thickened, about 5 minutes. Stir in basil and season with salt and pepper; cover and keep warm.

4. ASSEMBLE. Combine remaining Parmesan and provolone in medium bowl. Top browned eggplant slices with cheese mixture and bake until cheese is melted, about 3 minutes. Transfer half of sauce to platter and top with eggplant slices. Spoon remaining sauce over eggplant. Serve.

Cutting Eggplant Down to Size
One eggplant yields over a dozen rounds, which require serial batches of tedious breading and frying. We figured out a less laborious way for feeding two.

1. Using a serrated knife, slice off one side of eggplant (reserve) and cut two ¾-inch planks from the center.

2. Cut planks in half crosswise so they’ll neatly fit into the pan for frying in a single batch.

3. Chop reserved side pieces into strips, then into ½-inch cubes, and set aside for building the tomato pan sauce.

Fashion for Furry Friends =)

As promised, this post is all about my French Bull Dog, Isabel, "Izzy."  We got her at the beginning of September and she is the love of my life (besides my husband, of course!)

Since her fur is very short, she gets cold very easily when out in the elements.  This is fine with me because it means she gets a little wardrobe full of sweaters of her own =).  Don't get me wrong, I am not one who would go spend hundreds of dollars on a doggy wardrobe for her, but with my little girl in mind, I'm brought back to one of my favorite designers...

One reason I really like Tory Burch is that she is constantly asking her customers their opinions on styles, accessories, etc, her brand should be carrying...and then actually LISTENS to them!  Proof?  In one of her latest surveys, her customers expressed an overwhelming interest in some accessories for their pets.  Soon afterwards, an adorable line of pet products appeared on her website:

At $95.00 a piece, these items are just a little too steep for me to splurge on but I'm stalking the website hoping they'll go on sale soon!

Parade of Sweater Dresses!

I've found that a lot of women either love or hate sweater dresses.  I am on the "LOVE" side.  I find them warm for winter, work appropriate, comfortable and functional.   As it is, I am more of a dresses and skirts girl rather than pants just because I think they work better for my figure.  So for cooler fall/winter weather, sweater dresses paired with tights and boots or leggings is a smooth transition for me.  This past year (goodbye 2011!), Banana Republic had a great collection of sweater dresses in their winter line.

I'm loving this inspiration look with over-the-knee socks and boots rather than tights or leggings.  The marino wool is airy and soft and left me feeling chic and cozy all day.

This sweater dress is warm and SO comfortable when paired with some leggings.  The stripes of sparkle at the bottom of the dress also added interest and made it very festive for the holiday season.

This dress was a great find for weekends.  It's adorable for walking around the city or lunch with friends.

And finally, this dress is one of my favorites.  It is a soft, luxurious fine marino wool blend  that isn't too heavy to make you look bulkier than you are.  This is a main point for me when searching for a good sweater dress - I don't need any extra padding on top of my curves =).

The best part?  All four dresses were purchased on sale for a total of less than $250.00.  I almost never buy things full price at Banana - they seem to offer their 30% off promotions every other day and things go on sale very quickly there.  Many stores right now are aggressively discounting their merchandise well past the holidays and straight into the new year to stay afloat during tough economic times.   This means great deals in favor of patient bargain hunters.  They are all still available on the website RIGHT NOW!  Happy Shopping!

Declining Quality - This is Bananas =(

Since we didn't make it to Boston yesterday, Ivan and I went into the City today instead with Izzy our French Bull Dog (I'll be writing a post especially for her tomorrow!).  After getting a good walk in with her around Boston Garden and the Common, we headed over to Newbury Street for some window shopping.

For all you pet owners and lovers out there, a little known secret about Newbury Street is that most stores will allow dogs inside!  So we checked out Banana Republic with Izzy in tow.

The spring collection is out both in stores and online and while the styles, cuts and prints are great, I go back to my previous post where I mentioned a decline in quality across many brands.  Banana was no exception.  Instead of their silk or cotton blends, I found many otherwise adorable pieces like this ($79.50):

and this (both the skirt ($110.00) and top ($79.50):

that were sadly made of 100% polyester.  Such a disappointment!  Thank God I had a couple BR reward coupons to cash in or these prices would have definitely been too steep just for polyester.

Two winners from the new spring line I actually would pay full price for are this ($130.00 - linen and rayon):

and this (($150.00 - 95% wool, 5% spandex):

As for the rest of the stuff....BR, I still love you.  I will just wait for them to go on sale (it never takes long for BR to change their lineup over anyway!)
